The role of a technical writer is multifaceted.

Technical writers ensure that information is precise and easy to understand, and coordinate internal and external communication processes. They develop documentation concepts, identify the target audience’s information needs, research key product information, and ensure that legal and regulatory requirements are met. They write texts, prepare safety instructions, coordinate translations, and review the quality of the documentation. Their work always revolves around internal corporate information and communication processes and, above all, external technical documentation created to accompany products for various target audiences. To this end, technical writers create documents such as user manuals, online help, product videos, maintenance and service documents, training materials, and multimedia product catalogs.

Various types of software are used in technical writing.

Content management systems are increasingly being used for content creation, linguistic software for quality control, and automation software for translation. This information is managed in content management systems. Today, the most common output medium for information products is still paper or, alternatively, PDF documents. However, information is increasingly being created for interactive on-screen displays in the form of software or web content. Whether it’s app-based user interfaces, multilingual instructional videos, repair manuals using augmented reality, or training environments using virtual reality—many industries are already making extensive use of multimedia applications.

The field of work for technical writers is becoming increasingly complex due to new opportunities for publishing multilingual informational documents in a global market. For companies competing on the international stage, technical documentation is a critical quality factor. Well-trained technical writers are the foundation for this.
